For many people the removing of hair through shaving can be incredibly inconvenient and in some cases (such as being overweight or aged) very difficult. Because of this problem, men and women alike look for alternative ways to get rid of their unwanted hair to avoid embarrassment from razor burn or bumps. They turn to waxing, various hair removal sprays, and other temporary solutions to their problem. However, there is an alternative to any temporary hair removal. There is only one way to permanently remove unwanted facial or body hair and that is laser hair removal.
Patients who desire hair removal may have noticed unsightly hair growing on the leg, armpit, lip, arm, or other regions. Such factors may affect an individual's confidence, leading them to seek their own laser hair removal procedure. Laser hair removal uses highly amplified light to penetrate hair follicles. The pigmentation within the hair absorbs the light and the hair is destroyed within that follicle. Because the procedure targets the pigmentation within the hair, the procedure may prove ineffective for hairs that are white or have no pigment. This
procedure not only helps to restore the physical appearance of the patient, but also restores self-confidence and respect to the patient.
When the date for your laser hair removal procedure has arrived, you should plan on the procedure taking an hour or more depending on which types of procedure/s you are having performed on you. While the original procedure initially could only affect colored hairs on light skin, newer technologies have been developed so that the procedure can be applied to those with darker skin colors as well.
The board certified plastic surgeon will trim the hair in the target area to just a few millimeters. The laser will then be adjusted to match the specific needs of your skin based on skin color and hair type. A cold gel may be applied to the skin surface or special device known as a cool tip can be used to prevent burns to the patient's skin.
Discomfort or pain is minimal but some redness or swelling is common after the laser hair removal procedure. Because laser hair removal can only target hairs which are in the growing phase, several visits are usually necessary to remove all of the unwanted hairs, and a second removal session will usually be scheduled for within four to six weeks. Discuss with your cosmetic surgeon which procedure is best for you.
